New Walmington Pier - 2020

Recommended Posts

The start of another year with this well-travelled time-served microlayout! The layout gets a once fortnightly test prior to its first exhibition in February.

The 4ft long Christmas Tree box for transporting the layout didn't work as I nearly dropped it! So the box went to Stowmarket Railway Club for transporting G scale track.

So back to normal car boot loading for New Walmington Pier!

Copied from Southend Pier Railway Facebook Page (which I run):

Nineteen years ago I could not afford to buy the Southend Pier Railway and it was not for sale! So I built my own pier railway which is only 3ft long in 00 scale (1:76) and now has a narrow-gauge Southend Pier 'Toastrack' car made from a 3D print and running on 9mm gauge track.

Nineteen years on, Southend Pier Railway is still not for sale! Yet  'New Walmington Pier' has done 87 exhibitions throughout this country, had four make-overs, and in 2020 will embark on a further 9 exhibitions. The next one will be on Saturday 22nd February at:

Risborough & District Model Railway Club RISEX 20.

Community Centre, Wades Pk, Stratton Road,

Princes Risborough HP27 9AX

Been a bit quiet but took photos of my enhanced trams on the pier.

Shapeways Southend Pier 1890 Toastrack Car with footboard enhancement.

Stores Car with repainted roof and the next job will be converting it to open platforms - something which I dread!!

Lovely backscene, Dave. How effective it looks in those last two pics. Quite the place for a holiday!

What are the hotel rates like in New Walmington? 🙂

The end scene uses the Burlington Hotel in Dover built in 1860 and destroyed during World War 2. Unfortunately Edwardian Hotels never advertised their room rates, but the Burlington was part of a chain that also operated Great Central Hotel London, Russell Square Hotel London, Majestic Hotel Harrogate, Sackville Hotel Bexhill, Royal Pavilion Hotel Folkestone and Metropole Hotel Whitby so they weren't cheap!!

What a funny hobby we're in! I haven't even started my round of 2020 exhibitions and already had three invites for 2021!
January: Erith MRS, Longfield, Dartford
March: Norfolk & Suffolk Narrow Gauge Modellers, Beccles
July: Blyth & Tyne MRS Railex NE, North Shields.
These are 2021 shows, so don't look for me at their 2020 shows as I won't be there!!
