New Walmington Pier

You haven't heard much about this noted layout but it is still around resting in my garage following its abruptly curtailed 2020 exhibition schedule but will certainly be back for its 2021 schedule.

New Walmington Pier as most people see it at exhibitions.

Always good to have a tram on a layout.  😀

Mine trundles back and forth Sovereign Street.

Hi NorthBrit I’m tempted to buy one, would look nice one a SMS diorama board.

Hi Mark,

Here is one of my friends simple tram layout - one car, one track, one street, one board!
Called 'Torhampton' it represents a Victorian tram experiment using contact studs, unfortunately the prototype system (somewhere in South London) had the habit of electrocuting horses and people if the studs didn't fully retract after the tram had passed - hence the dead horse on the road.

That is a nice little layout your friend has Dave, it’s a shame about the dead horse.

It's his sick humour! On New Walmington Pier I have a Grim Reaper at the pier head as I reckon that he is misunderstood and needs time out!!

Dave it’s nice to have a sick sense of humour when modelling. You can place a figure or an animal anywhere you want just for the fun factor.

Back on Track!!!!

This weekend's job is painting my second Southend Pier Toastrack Car from grey primer to dark green with a cream roof.

Toastrack Car 8 returned to Southend after service on Volk's Railway Brighton. It didn't stay on public display for long due to vandalism.

The same car on display at Chelmsford City Museum following restoration by Alan Keef Engineering.

With the 30+ degrees C we've been getting here in parts of the UK it would be worth checking your layouts in garages, lofts or elsewhere in the house especially if they are little used. My New Walmington Pier (www.walmingtonpier.webs.com) is wrapped in plastic and kept in the garage, luckily it is in the shade and suffered no damage, unlike some of the unfortunate tales I've heard about of boards warping, rails pulled out of their fixings, straight track doing S bends, etc. Just an occasional check is all that's needed.

Took it out of its wrapping last week and the five most important items on the layout still work:

  • Layout
  • Southend Pier Tram
  • Works Tram
  • Carousel
  • Sound system.

Then re-wrapped and back on the shelf.

Here's New Walmington Pier in the raw - No trams, no plane, no sound system and no electrics connected:
