Dave another fine example of your modelling and layout skills. I really like your trams and the attention to detail is super.😉

Who said this hobby was relaxing and therapeutic? Just about a week before packing to go to Blackpool and withdrew the Tow Truck as it is too delicate for exhibition use, then I've found a broken wiring connection, can't find soldering iron, nearest model shop to me is 15 miles away in Bury St Edmunds, nearest really good model shop to me is 35 miles away in Norwich who has come to the rescue with a Hornby power connector track (I swear by them for their robustness on the exhibition circuit). So off to Norwich tomorrow (14/6) and after the weekend, a day to sort everything out for the show.

Dave I’m sure you will sort out the issue. I must admit I always use Hornby R8206 power track for my micro layouts and dioramas. I find they are so much easier than soldering.

Entire view of layout. Static Safety Training Car 888 has been removed to give a clear view for photography.
One taxi, two buses and three trams all in three feet length!!

Bit more 'concreting' in the crossover area (actually more plastic track infills)

A bit of subtle humour - Birkenhead 69 (built in Hong Kong) returns home!!!

All ready for the drive to Blackpool tomorrow (21/6), the weekend will have its sad moments for my late friend Debbie and I were there last year, but this year there are differences - Different route A1/M62/M6/M55, (last year it was M6/M55 at 25mph average speed). Different layout All Cars Stop Here  所有的汽车停在这里 , (last year it was New Walmington Pier). Different hotel. Different hall in the tram depot. and.... ....
The layout will receive a new tram. More about that when I get back on Monday!

Did the Silverfox DCC MRC Exhibition in Milton Keynes on Saturday 17/08 and I had a great time there.

The night before the show: Layout set up, but the stock and controller remained boxed up in the car overnight.

After 5 shows so far this year the layout is looking a bit scruffy and the eyesore of a crossover doesn't help, so after the October shows (Aylsham, Norfolk 5/10/19 and Colchester 29/10/19) I will replace the crossover with an S curve and keep the operation simple to ease my back.

The Emergency Crossover to be replaced by a double curve and remaining front track left redundant.

Hi piermaster

But wasn't the crossover supposed to be an eyesore of dug up road and track?

Perhaps revisit and refresh the whole thing including the dug up road and track

Perhaps also have a sneaky hidden electric points operating system a well.

Just a thought.

Regards John

Hi John,

This layout will not last that long, about two more years before dismantling.
To you, me and many tramway modellers it was supposed to be dug up road and track being installed. To the public it looked like a sloppy finish and possibly some exhibition managers felt the same.

I tried to take out the points and replace with curved track, but I was risking almost total destruction of that part of the layout, so the points have been secured for crossover and the operation set for single track shuttles with more than one tram used and that is quite common in smaller tram layouts and it eases my back!

A bit of tidying up before it’s last show of the year on 5/10 at Aylsham, Norfolk

The KMB Atlantean bus has now been substituted by a  China Motor Bus 1926 Leyland Lion to provide a heritage cameo.

The crossover has been secured ‘open’ to allow cars to cross and to save my back at exhibitions.

With only two shows booked for 2020 the layout”s future in this form is questionable.

Recent examination of the layout's structure revealed that it sustained baseboard damage as a result of its hard-working exhibition season and the layout will be dismantled and a new Hong Kong Tramways microlayout bearing the same name will be built during 2020 in readiness for the 2021 exhibition season.

The layout has suffered damage this year with seven shows in seven months, the worst part being a split along the board where the overhead traction poles are screwed in and the wires attached to them are tensioned, bit like a violin, you never drop a violin you place it down gently. Unfortunately I forgot to take the tension off the wires before doing some track work and heard a 'crack' I don't know how severe the split is but it looks like a replacement layout is forecast!

Hi piermaster

That is a great shame and sorry to hear of the disaster.

I would not waste time on trying to fix the split you would have to drill holes at each end of the split to stop it spreading then drill and tap some holes along the split without any up and down movement at the split then screw in some nylon set screws with a good dose of exterior PVA.

A lot of messing about with no guarantee of success in repairing the split, and you would also have to frame up the board to support the split.

All in all with that kind of work you might just as well make a new stronger base and start again.

I hope you have another one of those tram stop beer mats, it sets it off nicely, it also clearly identifies what it is supposed to be and looks good to.

I hope you will do a thread on the building of the new improved All Trams Stop Here.

Would putting some stick on rubber feet on the next one help with a little shock control?? in case of OOP'S!!!! moments

I have another thick MDF offcut left over from laminate flooring installation a few years ago, again 3ft x 8ins. I'm thinking of plain double track with a central tram stop with a shelter for each track, use all or some of the Bachmann office building backscene, addition of one or two footbridges linking the centre shelter to the pavement (Hong Kong has lots of pedestrian bridges over the tram tracks) , the same end scene and a double track screen at the opposite end to hide trams. Operation would be two trams on each track each stopping at the shelter, then continuing on to the end and then reversing back stopping at the shelter. Simple but it means there is always something running. The Kato controller has been sold on to a good home and replaced by a Hornby HM2000 dual track controller.1671808160_TrackPlan071119.jpg.30f062c64b2b5928962ab6c3eefb61db.jpg

Hi Piermaster

Do you have enough room on the RH end to put an R 6" curve in the back scene where it disappears into the fiddle tracks.

A curved back-scene  corner always looks better than a square corner.

At the other end some sort of city structure can be used to hide the corner.

regards John
