Hamburg Hauptbahnhof (29th and 30th April 2014)

9 posts in this topic

During a recent short visit to Hamburg, Germany, two visits were made to the harbour city's main station at Hamburg Hauptbahnhof, where a diverse variety of diesel and electric hauled action was recorded. What follows is a short selection of pictures taken on Tuesday 29th and Wednesday 30th of April 2014.

With various Deutsche Bahn diesel and electric locos, Inter City-Express units, shunters and other stuff inbetween.

excellent photos, great range of locos there. Hamburg HBF is supposed to be one of the busiest if not the busiest station in Germany I was there in the summer and also went to the Hauptbanhof and to the bridge over the lake.   I take it you also caught the swap over from the double headed diesel locos to the electric loco as well.

Thank you kindly!

The bridges over the railways are a whole lot different compared to those in the UK; the view is just decent enough, without the parapets being too high so that you have to stand on your tip-toes or on a box/step ladder!

As for that diesel and electric changeovers, I only recorded the reverse; electric loco comes off and the two diesel locos came on.

I don't normally entertain foreign railways well, but you've got to give Germany credit for having one of the vast rail systems in the world...

Miniatur Wunderland was just as epic; watch out for a special feature coming soon!

Cracking photos as usual David!

Thanks Jack!

Hauptbahnhof wasn't the only reason for going to Hamburg; Miniature Wonderland also got an honourable visit too!

Hello David,

Lovely pictures!

Indeed! Not only has Hamburg got the wonderful Hauptbahnhof, there is the gorgeous Damtor station;

Lovely Altona;

The rather amazing Harburg;

And only a short train ride away, the incredible Maschen yard;

I confess! My mate and I spent a week based in Hamburg in 2013 and we didn't make time for Wunderland, the real thing was too good!

Cheers,

John E.

Thanks for the kind comments John, and good snaps too!

I would've done more to explore the local rail system in Hamburg, but I only had two complete days to spend when I went over in April 2014 (Went on the afternoon of Sunday 27th, returning on the afternoon of Wednesday 30th April); the Monday was preoccupied with Miniatur Wunderland and Hamburg Hauptbahnhof the next day. If ever I am fortunate to find myself in Hamburg again, I'll try and look a lot further.

Still, a great experience in itself!

Hi David,

You're welcome and thank you!

Yes! Two days just isn't enough, neither is a week really, especially if you use the Lander tickets or Schonesbuchender(?) (weekend) ticket for cheap travel around quite a large area.

So far, I've managed 4 trainspotting trips to Germany, Rhine valley, Cologne, Hamburg and Nurnburg, all have been highly entertaining and inspirational. I'm torn for the next trip, Leipzig/Halle or Hamburg again?

Cheers,

John E.
